The Weight Loss Struggle No One Talks About: A Black Woman's Perspective

As a Black female physician specializing in metabolic health, I've witnessed firsthand how our weight loss journey differs from what's typically discussed in medical literature. The intersection of race, gender, and health creates unique challenges that deserve attention.

The impact of chronic stress on our bodies can't be overstated. As Black women, we often carry the weight of multiple responsibilities - professional demands, family obligations, and the constant navigation of microaggressions. This persistent stress elevates cortisol levels, making weight loss particularly challenging. Studies show that elevated cortisol can increase appetite, especially for calorie-dense foods, and promote abdominal fat storage.

Perhaps most concerning is our systematic exclusion from clinical trials for weight loss medications. In recent GLP-1 trials, Black women represented less than 10% of participants, despite being disproportionately affected by obesity and related health conditions. This underrepresentation means we lack crucial data about how these medications specifically affect our bodies.

When seeking medical care, many of us face dismissive attitudes or have our concerns minimized. I encourage my patients to:

  • Prepare detailed health histories and symptom logs
  • Bring supporting documentation about family health history
  • Request specific tests and medications when appropriate
  • Seek second opinions without hesitation
  • Connect with healthcare providers who understand our unique challenges
